Thelma Mentern, from Orchard House, Church Lane, Portesham, sells plants throughout the year with all profits going to local charities. Currently she has annuals, perennials and herbs in many varieties together with a large selection of bedding plants. Organic compost, produce, preserves and all occasion cards also available.

Portesham WI celebrate the Jubilee Weekend

Portesham WI are promoting all things Jubilee with their village cafe and Jubilee exhibition, which will include the unveiling of the Jubilee banner, on Saturday, 2 June at the usual time of 10am in the village hall. Tea, coffee and bacon rolls will be on offer together with a cake and produce stall and a raffle.

I WASN’T one of the fortunate ones to have a ticket to the recent sell out Artsreach event by Time Travelling Magicians, Morgan and West, but I’m told that the large audience, young and old, were mystified, riveted, amazed and intrigued by the magic tricks and precognitive powers that the two magicians produced. A memorable, lively and fun evening was enjoyed by all.

Portesham Primary school’s school council recently handed over a cheque for a staggering £1200 to trustees Jane Cherry and Rosy Lloyd from the charity Positive Steps. Through the school council co-ordinator Laura Evans, the children were made aware of a school in the village of Nguluwe, Malawi where the children there were being taught under a fig tree.

THERE was a wonderful atmosphere despite the unkind weather at St Peter’s Fun dog show and fete. Profits were slightly down on last year but this didn’t stop visitors from enjoying the many stalls, games and catering outlets provided by local community groups.

Portesham primary school seen here enjoying a fabulous royal wedding street party lunch. Children, parents and staff all dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate the event. The children each brought in a plate of food to share… just like the Silver Jubilee street parties in 1977!!

SHOOTING Stars, the well attended after school club at Portesham school, run by Rev Ada Whittock and her team of volunteers from St Peter’s church, had great fun last Wednesday taking off their shoes and socks to make a multi coloured footprint paint collage. Afterwards they drew around their hands and feet to make three beautiful crosses which will hopefully be displayed, together with the footprints, at three churches in the benefice.
