THE Broadwey and Upwey Horticultural Society have chalked up another great success with their summer flower show held recently at the Memorial Hall.

There were 220 entries from 44 exhibitors covering the whole range of garden produce and ornament and what a delight it was to members and visitors alike – perfect dahlias, gladioli, beautiful arrangements and vegetables to clamour for. The largest onion on show weighed out of the ground at 5½ lbs – a whopper grown by John Morris.

It takes a great deal of effort to put together a show of this quality and the work of Eve Morris as show secretary is much appreciated. Janet Willment of Island Garden Nurseries presented the prizes and heartily congratulated the organisers.

The Society meets on the first Thursday of the month at St Nicholas and St Laurence School at 7.30pm and newcomers are greatly welcomed.

UPWEY and Broadwey WI have been enjoying their summer holidays after a busy year.

The speaker at the July meeting explained and demonstrated the science behind healing reactions through pressure on various parts of the body – timely, no doubt, with all the energy needed to make the best of the out-of-doors.

Now they’re ready to kick off again with their autumn programme, which begins on Thursday, September 9 at 2.30pm in the Memorial Hall when Marion Jeffery will be conducting another of her popular auctions. That will be followed by a cream tea ad members are invited to bring a pretty plate and flower of the month for display.

Their meetings are always interesting, with appeal to many different aspects of life and new members are always welcome.

A TWIST in coyote’s tale “ is the title of the talk to be given at the next meeting of the Wessex Research Group on Wednesday, September 8.

Celia Gunn will be describing living with a North American tribe – sounds interesting.

The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall, ring 01305 816644 for info.
