DRINKING for a good cause is surprisingly easy thanks to the top-flight offerings from sunny wineries in Argentina, Chile and South Africa – which champion Fairtrade projects and help raise global awareness for Fairtrade Fortnight (February 28 to March 13).

Canelo Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (£4.99 from £6.99, M&S)

If you love a zesty, refreshing white, Marks & Spencer has a new arrival from Chile, with £2 off during Fairtrade Fortnight. The Canelo Sauvignon Blanc is tightly packed with elderflower fruits and a lemony finish – a perfect partner with prawns or crab salad.

Fairhills Colombard Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (£6.49, Waitrose)

Fairhills, the world’s largest Fairtrade wine brand, has this rather good Sauvignon Blanc; a blend of two grapes keeps the zingy freshness and softens the wine with bright tropical-fruit flavours. An ideal aperitif, it’s delicious with or without food.

Fairhills Shiraz Merlot 2010 (£6.69, Morrisons)

For a smooth red, try Fairhills Shiraz Merlot 2010. Ripe with red-berry fruits, a hint of chocolate and not too dry on the finish, it’s an easy glugger that partners well with tomato sauce-based dishes.

Argentina Fairtrade Chardonnay Reserve 2009 (£6.49, Tesco)

Chardonnay fans will enjoy the fruits of this Argentinean number. Not only has the Fairtrade Fairhills Mendoza Project helped finance a new medical centre, it’s produced this very quaffable white wine. Packed with tropical fruits and honey on the nose, it’s satisfyingly refreshing on its own, or with roast chicken or pork.

Torres Santa Digna Gewurztraminer 2010, Chile (£7.99 – RRP – vintagemarque.co.uk)

The Torres Spanish wine-making dynasty set up shop in Chile nearly 30 years ago, and last year its Torres Santa Digna range achieved Fairtrade certification. Spicy with a floral, honeyed nose and a blast of nettles, this medium-dry white should be served well-chilled for a perfect match with shellfish and any type of Asian cuisine.
