ASDA Extra Special (£1.36 for 195g)

It’s a bold move by ASDA to sell their horseradish for more than 50p more than Colman’s – one of the benchmarks in sauce making. Yet you have to say they haven’t disappointed. This sauce is creamy, rich and does have a bit of a kick to it. That said it doesn’t taste as fresh as it’s competitors, is slightly too sweet and the price is a little too high. 3/5

Colman’s (81p for 250ml)

Not for the faint hearted, Colman’s do pack a punch with their horseradish sauce. However, if you have a penchant for fiery condiments, then this will be the one for you. But it’s not just about heat, as this sauce is packed with flavour and has a fresh quality, earning it a place on the table at Sunday lunch. 3.5/5

Sainsbury’s (68p for 185g)

Pass the water, this is a fiery affair. Definitely the hottest out of the lot, this clears the airways and will appeal to those who like it hot. Yet I suspect this will be a little too much for most palates. What’s more it is a little too runny and lacks much in the way of texture. A cult classic rather than best seller, I feel. 2.5/5

Bramwells from ALDI (35p for 170g)

Time and time again, ALDI have proven that you can get quality produce at budget friendly prices. However, their horseradish sauce is not an example of this. Runny, mild and with synthetic qualities, unfortunately this sauce is the tail end Charlie of the bunch. Keep trying, we know you can get it right. 2/5

The English Provender from Waitrose (£1.49 for 200g)

If Gran made horseradish sauce it would probably taste like this. Thanks to its fresh, unadulterated flavour, you could be forgiven for thinking it has come straight from the garden. The texture complements a beef joint perfectly and, although it packs a small punch, it won’t blow your head off. It might be the most expensive but you’ll be paying for quality.
