AS A humble drummer, it’s not very often I get to blow my own trumpet, if you get my drift.

But this week, I make no apologies for parping like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie trying to out-honk each other in a wind tunnel.

In some sort of logistical miracle, some of south Dorset’s finest musicians, and myself, from some of the region’s most popular bands are getting together for one night only to form a supergroup, celebrating the music of David Bowie, who sadly left this planet in January at the age of 69.

The Kings of Oblivion, for that is they, will be performing some of Bowie’s most-loved and well-known songs, taken from the seemingly bottomless Velvet Goldmine that makes up his incredible nigh-on 50-year back catalogue.

It’s not often you’ll get a line-up like this: Iain Weetman from The Mighty Fine and Jamie Parker from Vanilla Radio and Ansell and Gretal on guitars, Lucy Broddle from Dr Robert, Gimmie Six and Till There Was Uke on keyboards, Brian Donnelly on sax, my Dinnerladies colleague Andy Sykes on bass and my good self, twatting the drums.

That’s just the house band, and they’ll be joined by a succession of singers, including Marc Eyre from Freak Circus, Ian Neale from The Half Dead Darlings, Jamie Pinnow from The Dinnerladies, the ‘Welsh Woody Guthrie’ Kipper, and the rock’n’roll royalty of Chris Whiteside, of Freezer fame and Big Gunz infamy.

Incidentally, The Kings of Oblivion, as I’m sure you’re aware, is a line from Bowie’s cryptic masterpiece The Bewlay Brothers.

Other names suggested and rapidly rejected for the band include Absolute Beginners, The Laughing Gnomes and The Earwigs from South Dorset.

It’s all happening on Easter Sunday, March 27, from 8pm, at the New Vic on Weymouth seafront and has all the makings of a memorable night, and for a very good cause too.

It’s just £5 on the door and all money goes to Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, which does such fabulous work in the community supporting people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

All their care is free and they rely on public donations, so you can do your bit. Put on your red shoes, it’s a crash course for the ravers so glam up for the night, and we’ll see you there.

Next week’s gig guide will feature a comprehensive listing of all the live music events over the Easter weekend, including the Quayside Festival and Hippy Fest in Weymouth, so if you’d like your event included, send your details to gigs@dorsetecho.co.uk

Okay, time to take my protein pills and put my helmet on...
