Where can you find Tony Bennett dueting with Max Bygraves or Dorothy Squires doing a turn with Ken Dodd and Tom Jones?

Welcome to the whacky world of Joe Longthorne - a fine singer in his own right but best loved as a musical impressionist.

Bringing his latest tour to the Pier Theatre last night Longthorne was in his element. But then he has always liked Bournemouth. Indeed three decades back he lived in the town, over a Chinese restaurant at The Lansdowne.

Since then he has enjoyed dizzying highs - living in mansions and playing the Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House and terrifying lows - a near fatal brush with cancer and financial ruin.

Mercurial spirit that he is, Longthorne picked himself up and fought his way back to success. He may not be playing huge arenas and his TV profile is subterranean but his show is just about perfect for the Pier. With a slick backing band and Maurice Grumbleweed as the main support, its solid seaside holiday fare.

Joe’s loyal fans were out in force too rewarding him with a standing ovation and a mass of bouquets. He in turn offered them the chance to buy his autobiography... at a £2 discount.
