IT'S been more than two years since indie-pop band, MGMT, made waves in the industry with their infectious beats and now the duo are back.

Brooklyn based friends Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser showcased their latest album, Congratulations, to a sold-out 02 in Bournemouth on Friday night.

And although their second album is a huge departure from their first hit, Oracular Spectacular, the crowd was enthralled.

The band’s original offering, written eight years ago, was full of indie pop beats and commercial tracks which earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting indie disco bands to come out of America.

But their latest album is full of trance and psychedelic tunes, which the band admits is where they have been heading all along.

The packed-out crowd responded well to both old and new material.

Frontman Andrew had the fans bopping along to popular tracks like Electric Feel and immediately after they were mesmorised by the hypnotic tune that is The Youth.

While it’s clear the band has come a long way since playing music in their college dorm rooms, at times their sound felt repetitive. Incessant tamborine shaking and a lack of audience interaction made the gig a tad tiresome and I found myself almost nodding off to the trance themes.

But I was pulled back to reality when the band played their encore, and hit song, Kids.

Full of addictive beats and an unforgettable hook, the entire audience was on its feet, everyone jumping in unison.

I left the gig with the theme firmly stuck in my head and whistling the tune all the way home – which must mean we haven't heard the last of MGMT.
