MORE than 50 years after it was first staged, Joan Littlewood’s powerful indictment of the compulsion and greed that led to the sacrifice of millions of lives in World War I still has a strong statement to make, thanks to this amazing production by Encore Theatre Club.
A cast of 18 with a three-piece musical accompaniment led by Murray Davis, brings home the truth behind the headlines of the war that brought Europe to a standstill and cost over 10 million lives.
With a narrative on screen which tells the true story of the war together with pictures from the era, the cast under the direction of Miles Bell give spellbinding performances as they portray life in the trenches and at home.
And amid the horror, there is often laughter on the menu thanks in particular to a hilarious army drill sergeant who makes mincemeat of his new recruits when he puts them through their paces.
A brilliant job.
