FANTASTIC! The ultimate feel-good musical is back with a bang and wowed a full house at the Mayflower last night.

There’s nothing quite like a packed theatre and a standing ovation to set you up for the week and Hairspray guarantees both of those things.

The star-studded cast has ensured there are few seats left so grab them while you can.

Set in the 1960s, Hairspray shows how a love of music and dance can overcome many of life’s troubles.

It’s the story of Tracy Turnblad, an ordinary girl who’s determined not to let small matters like sexism and racism get in the way of a good time.

John Travolta’s Edna Turnblad from the 2007 film is a tough act to follow but Tony Maudsley, fresh from his hair salon in ITV’s Benidorm, makes a wonderful, camp job of it.

Claire Sweeney excels, as usual, as the manipulative Velma Von Tussle and Peter Duncan gives an endearing performance as Wilbur.

Brenda Edwards proves she can belt them out with the best of them as the inspiring Motormouth Maybelle and Freya Sutton’s Tracy is adorable.

But it's the ensemble that make this show stand out from the rest. Dance enthusiasts are in for a treat with some truly jaw-dropping moves, mainly performed by Layton Williams.

And watch out for Dex Lee's drop into splits as he takes richly-deserved applause for a stunning performance as Seaweed.

Hairspray is so well-written it sounds and feels like it’s been around for 50 years – it’s hard to believe its first stage performance was this side of the millennium.

This show never disappoints.
