LARGER than life characters are coming together for a community pantomime and dance around the maypole.

On May 1 Bridport Youth Centre will house an evening of alternative fun with maypole dancing, stalls, a variety of family entertainment and a fun pantomime.

David Powell will be playing his squeeze box for everyone to join in dancing around the maypole and simple maypole dances will be taught for all ages to dance together.

A hilarious pantomime We’re Behind You! will be performed by the Cartoon Action Theatre.

Using larger than life characters and well loved pantomime heroes and villains the play addresses local issues such as the loss of rural buses and fracking, as well as national ones and the NHS.

The production group have previously put on plays to show the importance of local and national issues, and campaign against them.

Last year, the theatre group performed an amusing take on bus cuts in Bridport in The Amazing Disappearing 31 Bus Show.

Author Lucy Goodison said: “We took the traditional format and had a bit of fun with it, even down to the panto horse.”

Director Miles Bell said: “This is a great opportunity to put together most of Cartoon Action Theatre’s short plays in pantomime form interspersed with local musicians, story tellers and poets.

“With subjects ranging from the NHS to local bus services, a hilarious evening is promised while raising funds for the local Labour party.”

Musical duo Dron Hill, Pete the Poet, Stellaray musicians Andy Leppard, Simon Hartung and Andrew Dixon will be performing and threading through the pantomime to combine to make it a special event.

The evening will end with a disco with DJ Crumpet Clare behind the turntables.

Organisers said the event fittingly falls on International Workers Day.

n The community event will be raising money for the Labour Party and starts at 6pm on May 1 at Bridport Youth Centre, Gundry Lane. We’re Behind You! will start at 7pm. Tickets available on the door.
