PUPPETS, props and paint will make for a summer of fun for children and young people

The Lyric Theatre and Bridport Arts Centre’s summer activity programme Jamboree is well underway, keeping youngsters aged two to 12 and their families entertained over the holidays. The next three workshops at The Lyric next week involve puppets, props or paints! Which will you choose?

On Monday August 7, try your hand at Bringing Puppets and Props to Life, in this workshop led by theatre director Niki McCretton for ages eight and up. Using objects to create puppets and bringing everyday things to life - from Russian ‘tea cup’ puppets to mops turning into monsters - learn how to make things look alive and create voices and characters for them.

Niki uses puppets in most of her professional theatre shows with her company Stuff & Nonsense who are based at The Lyric and she will have a collection of objects for you to get creative with. The workshop runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm and costs £12. Bring a drink and a snack.

Get crafty on Tuesday August 8, in Fancy Dress Up Puppets. This workshop, for ages eight to adult, is led by professional puppet and prop maker Holly Miller. Create the head for your character out of newspaper and masking tape then design and make interchangeable costumes for your puppet. Take it home at the end of the workshop! The workshop runs from 10am to 1pm and costs £15. Please dress for mess and bring a drink and a snack.

Many families in Bridport will know the Oops Wow toddler art group, which often has a waiting list. Jo from Oops Wow is running two Messy Art sessions as part of Jamboree, on Wednesday August 9, a morning session from 10:30am to 12pm and an afternoon session from 2 to 3.30pm. These are immersive, process-based, large scale messy art sessions for very young children (2-6) and parents/carers to stay and join in. Try making camouflage paintings to wear, run around and hide in. See where our painted lines take us on a dramatic drawing adventure! Please wear old clothes, bring some spare clothes as well as a snack. Tickets cost £10 (£7.50 for siblings).

Tickets for all Jamboree events must be booked in advance and are available from Bridport Arts Centre box office.
