A TRIO of festive parties from hell is brought vividly to life by Alan Aykbourne’s caustic Absurd Person Singular.

The play is being performed later this week by Weymouth Drama Club directed by Derek Sawtell, who says the production is the realisation of a dream.

He said: “It’s a play I’ve always wanted to get my teeth into and direct and we are lucky to have such a fantastic cast.

“Rehearsals are well advanced and we have also been very lucky as the set requires three different kitchens and these have been provided and built by Kitchen Craft on the Granby Industrial Estate.

“I am convinced that the Weymouth theatregoers will enjoy this play immensely.”

Absurd Person Singular is set over three Christmases in the kitchen of three couples. Sidney Hopcroft, an ambitious tradesman, and his downtrodden wife Jane are the hosts of the first segment of the play.

Geoffrey Jackson, a philandering architect, and his understandably depressed wife Eva are the focal point of the second Christmas while banker Ronald Brewster-Wright and his alcoholic wife Marion host the third party.

As the play progresses, we see how their fortunes rise and fall.

The play features Dave Moore and Rachel Turberville-Smith as Sidney Hopcroft and his wife Jane.

Simon Raynes plays Geoffrey Jackson with Caroline Portsmouth making a welcome return to the stage as his depressed wife Eva.

Andy Neve, a newcomer to the drama club, has taken the role of Ronald Brewster-Wright, the banker, while Cherry Bush is his alcoholic wife Marion.

Derek said: “I am really enjoying doing the play. We were going to do Season’s Greetings instead but had to drop it as it is being doing professionally in London, but I think this is a better play because it is so funny, although it does have its black moments as well.

“The cast are absolutely excellent and the backstage team has done a fantastic job as well.”

The production is at Weymouth Pavilion from Thursday to Saturday, October 21 to 23 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £9.75 from the Pavilion box office on 01305 783225 or online.
