GIRL power comes to Milton Abbey Music Festival this August Bank Holiday in the shape of three talented, young Dorset musicians and a Jazz Diva from London.

Philippa Goodall was, until recently, a student at Bryanston School.

She is an amazing violinist and is performing Elgar’s Violin Sonata and music by Ravel and Liszt in St James Church in historic Milton Abbas on the Bank Holiday Saturday morning. She will be accompanied by Duncan Honeybourne.

Emma Kirkby might not be at the festival, but Bournemouth soprano, Sarah Palfreman-Kay is a worthy substitute.

Her pure voice has been delighting audiences across the country, from Wells Cathedral to Westminster Abbey.

She is soloist in Friday night’s Brahms Requiem in Milton Abbey and in the late night Candlelit Concert in the ancient chapel of St Catherine’s, which nestles in the trees above Milton Abbey itself.

She will be singing an unaccompanied Monteverdi sacred Madrigal and joining forces with Christina Scott in four songs by Holst.

Christina Scott is Head of Strings at Bryanston School. She leads the Wessex Chamber Orchestra, which will be performing in Sunday’s Abbey concert and has performed many solos with this and other orchestras.

She has been soloist in the Beethoven, Bruch, Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi Violin concertos.

She has a busy Festival Sunday, with leading the orchestra in performances of Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Charpentier’s Te Deum and music by Pergolesi, Lotti and an unknown Baroque composer whose music was found repairing cracks in a lute, followed by the Candlelit Concert, in which she will perform Bach’s famous Sonata No. 1 for unaccompanied violin.

Completing the quartet is jazz diva Juliet Kelly. Based in London, Juliet travels the globe giving concerts of great classics and original music from Cole Porter to Soft Cell and Eurythmics.

Courtney Pine describes her as ‘the new voice on the UK jazz scene’.

This has been a busy year for Juliet: as well as a UK tour she has had gigs in Kuala Lumpur and Greece.
