AWARD-WINNING musician, singer, producer, twice Mercury Music Prize nominee, winner of more than five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and scion of the UK folk royal family, Eliza Carthy is one of the UK’s pre-eminent modern musicians.

She returns to Dorset later this month to promote her latest album with her new band, which includes Emma Smith, who has recorded with Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz.

The result is a more up-tempo show than before, with powerful, vital and exuberant rhythms absorbed from her travels around the globe.

Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music. She still divides her time between touring and recording with her legendary parents, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson as well as engaging in numerous pioneering solo and band projects, including work with Pere Ubu and Melanie Challenger, an artist in residence in Antarctica.

She remains close to her family, touring and recording with both parents while continuing her music career in tandem with her increasingly busy broadcasting schedule.

In what has become something of a parallel career, Eliza has co-presented the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, been a regular guest-presenter on the BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe Show and has made many appearances on BBC TVs Later with Jools Holland.

In her own right, Eliza has been the subject of an hour-long ITV documentary (Heaven & Earth) and My Music on Channel 5.

She is appearing at Lighthouse in Poole on October 14 and venue spokesman Paul Tucker said: “Eliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation.

“More than most, she has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance.”

The gig starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £16 plus concessions from 0844 406 8666.
