Disability Cabaret Asks Can I Be Frank With You?
The Cabaret-style show was provoked by the myths, misunderstandings and misrepresentations of disability and ‘otherness’ in films and life.
Inspired by Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ the show is a compilation of monologues, sketches and songs written by DATco’s members, which are interspersed with exciting stills and video footage.
The show was created with Director, Jamie Beddard, former Associate Director of Graeae Theatre Company, and Actor/Director,Tony Horitz (State of Play Arts) and Michele O’Brien and designed by Heidi Steller.
The TOPS show ‘The Hidden’ was created through a series of workshops led by Sarah Archdeacon, of Corali Dance and explores the themes of Frankenstein and issues about hiding our identity behind masks.
The showcase event is part of the Impact programme funded by Arts Council England, aiming to help disabled artists, such as DATCo and TOPS promote their work to mainstream arts venues, as well schools and conferences.
Steve McCarthy, DATCo member says, “We want to expand the audience for our work by performing in new venues. The show contains monstrous songs, thought provoking monologues, freaky, humorous sketches, mesmerising movement all explored in a lighthearted way.”
Catch their performance at Bridport Arts Centre on February 3, 2012 at 7.30pm For tickets, call the box office on 01308 424204.
