I WOULD like to refer to the article aboutthe council offices (Echo, Nov 28) and the remarks made by Councillor Orrell: “It would be a tragedy if we get lobbed with this old concrete block for the next 100 years. It might look right in Wolverhampton or Birmingham but it does not look right in conservation Georgian Weymouth”

I and many others are immigrants from the Midlands to Weymouth and whilst I entirely agree with him in saying it isn’t right for Weymouth, I would like to know exactly what he is implying.

I personally am most offended.

It would not look right in Wolverhampton or Birmingham – as I understand it, he is implying that we are second rate citizens but it is okay for us to come for holidays and put our money into Weymouth, and retire here, adding to the economy and “doing our bit”

for the community, but Wolverhampton and Birmingham can have the ugly buildings. I think you are behind the times Cllr Orrell, the centre of Birmingham has been recently modernised particularly New Street Station.

I agree that the old council offices should be demolished, it is an eyesore. What I don’t understand is why it was sold for £4.5m and not the £6m that McCarthy and Stone offered.

This area needs new buildings, and needs modernising, so please demolish it.

In the meantime I am proud to be born and bred in Birmingham, but love living in Weymouth, but I take offence to Councillor Orrell’s comments.
