WORK is underway to build the new three-storey fire station and headquarters at Poundbury in Dorchester.

A ceremony was held to cut the first piece of turf on the site and celebrate the start of work.Dorset Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Darran Gunter and construction company Morgan Ashurst's area director Paul Gale were among the dignitaries. Mr Gale said: "It's always a very exciting time when work begins.

"The design of the buildings will reflect the Poundbury village style which has been established by the Duchy of Cornwall. We hope members of the fire and rescue service and the public are looking forward to seeing the buildings take shape over the coming months."

The Poundbury project is due to be completed in September 2008.

The work is part of a private finance initiative project worth £46 million.

As well as the new headquarters and fire station at Poundbury, a new divisional headquarters for Dorset Police and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service is being built at Wimborne Road, Poole. A new fire station at Marshes End, Poole, is also part of the plan.
