SCHOOLBOY Lewis Taylor is pushing a shopping trolley from his home to school and back in the name of charity.

The 14-year-old will be wheeling the Morrisons trolley from Littlemoor in Weymouth to All Saints School at Wyke Regis and home again for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

His chariot will be weighed down by two 20 kg tyres and 60 kg weights on the 12-mile challenge.

Lewis hopes to raise £1,000 for Weldmar from today’s fundraiser.

He said: “The hardest part is going to be pushing the trolley up the hill to my school. It’s really steep.”

A keen fundraiser, Lewis has already participated in similar events and recently raised £500 for the RNLI.

He said: “Earlier in the year I dragged some tyres for a friend and the RNLI.

“So instead of dragging something, I thought I’d push something.”

Morrisons in Weymouth has donated use of a trolley for the day.

In preparation Lewis has been sticking to a strict exercise regime of an hour of intensive weightlifting three times a week.

Lewis estimates his feat will take about three and a half hours to complete but is confident he will succeed.

Lewis was inspired to raise money for the trust thanks to Jo Sharkey, Weldmar’s child support worker, who led a school assembly giving an insight into the work of the charity.

Lewis chose Weldmar because of the valuable work the charity does for the community, and because all its services are free.

Lewis said his family and friends think his wacky challenge is mad.

He added: “But they’ve been really supportive with their donations.

“They’ve really gone out of their way to help me.”

Lewis is just £200 short of his £1,000 target.

Matt Smith, events fundraiser for the trust, praised Lewis’s efforts.

He said: “We really appreciate what Lewis is doing and wish him the best of luck with his challenge.

“The money Lewis will raise will go towards caring for patients and their families in their time of need throughout Dorset.

“His support really will make a difference.”

Mr Smith said that the trust faces a huge fundraising challenge, especially in the current economic climate and needs to raise £10 every minute of every day.

He said: “We are extremely lucky with the support we get from the community. We couldn’t provide the service without them.”
