Councillors approve proposal for flats on Portland
1:30pm Friday 16th November 2012 in News
COUNCILLORS have approved a proposal to convert a large property on Portland into six flats.
Members of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s planning and traffic committee approved the application.
A number of neighbouring residents objected about the plans to convert the large chalet bungalow in Montrose Close into six self-contained flats.
There were fears that it will cause disruption and sound pollution in the quiet cul-de-sac, which is home to many elderly people.
Grant Purnell, owner and applicant, spoke at the meeting and said the flats will be more in keeping with the size of properties in the area.
He said: “The house has been for sale for over a year and there have been no viewings. It’s too large for the location and I think the units will be more attractive to a first time buyer.”
Councillor Ray Banham said the property lends itself to the conversion.
He said: “It’s a very large property and it’s a shame that it can’t be sold as a single occupancy. There would be hardly any external alterations and there is ample parking on site.”
