MAYOR Margaret Leicester has urged people to help those in need this Christmas.

She has launched her Christmas Fund Appeal with support from Weymouth and Portland Lions Club.

The fund aims to raise as much as possible to improve the lives of those within the community.

Coun Leicester said: “The Christmas Fund makes such a big difference to many people throughout Weymouth and Portland.

“The borough has such a great community spirit and I am always very grateful for the hundreds of people who donate and help raise money.

“I would also like to say a big thank you to the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club for administering the fund again.

“Their tremendous efforts really do help those locally in need.”

The appeal raised £2,650 last year.

Causes helped included: l Christmas lunch for elderly and vulnerable people l Support for families suffering hardship, particularly for children l Meals for the homeless l Financial support for self help community groups l furniture for single parent families Les Board, of Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind donations to the Mayor’s Fund last year.

“It is only with their kindness that we are able to make life a little bit easier for those in our community in greatest need.”

Coun Leicester said that donations of any amount are gratefully received.

They can be sent to Mayor’s Christmas Fund Appeal, Council Offices, North Quay, Weymouth, DT4 8TA. Or they can be dropped in at the reception desk where appeal envelopes are available.

All donations will be acknowledged, unless people ask to remain anonymous.

Any organisations, groups or individuals that could benefit from the fund support this year can contact the council.
