Adult and child rescued from car on West Stafford bypass

AN adult and child were rescued from a car which became stuck in flood water on the West Stafford bypass.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5.26pm yesterday.

A technical rescue crew from Weymouth and two fire engines from Dorchester were called out.

Firefighters used wading gear to lead the adult and child to safety.

A spokesman said the service was called out to several similar incidents across the county last night where motorists have ignored road closure signs and entered flood water.

She said: "These are in place for your own safety - please find an alternative route."

Call outs such as this used to be called Special Service Call, (SSC) and at the Chief Fire Officers discretion could be charged for. I would like to think that this driver will be sent the bill for this rescue. It may make them have second thoughts before ignoring warning signs and trying to drive through flood water again.

This road has been clearly marked as closed during the worst of the recent weather, with diversions through the village. Drivers who ignore this should do so at their own peril.

This road has been clearly signed as closed since at least Thursday. They should have left them there. Worse to take the risk in the dark with a child in the car. Plus the detour through W Stafford hardly adds a mile to the journey.

Nice to see such Christmas cheer for ones fellow man!!!!

Regards the predicament, the same could be said for mariners who disregards the advice of the coast guard and go to sea when the weather is against them. (They rarely are).
