A PERSON has died in a Wyke Regis caravan fire.

Police officers, fire crews and forensic investigators on scene at Martleaves Farm, Ryemead Lane, Weymouth, investigating the incident this morning but have now left.

Eyewitnesses have seen forensic officers moving around the site and putting items into plastic bags.

Police officers received a call from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service last night (Jan 7) reporting a caravan fire. Police officers attended. A Dorset Police spokesman said: “Officers believe a body has been located in the remains of the caravan.”

Eyewitnesses living next to the farm rushed out into the road after seeing the flames and the flashing lights of the emergency services at around 10pm.

Edward Sanders of South Road said: “I saw loads of blue lights and huge flames.”

Neighbour Frank Rashliegh said he saw ‘a lot of commotion.’

Gwen Miller, of Marlborough Avenue, said: "I knew there was a lot of activity last night around the area, but I'm shocked and saddened to hear a person has died. It is awful."

South Road resident Isabel Adams said she was upset to hear what had happened.

She said: “It is really sad – an awful thing to happen right behind my house.”

CID West is investigating the circumstances of the death and the fire. The incident is being investigated as an unexplained death.
