THE memory of a man who loved West Bay water polo is being honoured in the tenth annual sporting awards in his name.

Bridport Leisure Centre is hosting the Betambeau Awards, set up to celebrate the sporting achievements of local youngsters.

Leisure centre duty manager Katie McCready said: “2012 has been a great year for sport with the huge success of Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics. Olympic fever hit the nation and I am very much looking forward to celebrating the sporting achievements made by the young people of Bridport.”

The Betambeau awards commemorate the life of Ronald Betambeau, who, at around the age of 14 came to Bridport.

He had many local friends and an important part of his free time was spent at West Bay playing water polo, between the two piers of the harbour. He also swam competitively, keeping all of his medals to prove his achievements.

After World War II, where he served in the Royal Artillery in North Africa and Italy, he moved away but continued to care about Bridport and its young people.

His family believe this award is both an appropriate way to remember his life and his own sporting achievements and a good way to help young people in West Dorset.

There are four categories, boys from six 6 to 11 years, girls the same age and a category for both boys and girls from 12 to 18.

Nominations are made for the student’s dedication, enthusiasm for sport despite adversity, and their sporting excellence.

Nominations are being sought and forms are available from Katie McCready at the leisure centre on 01308 427464 Nominations need to be received by February 1. The ceremony is on March 1.
