POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted in Weymouth town centre.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Weymouth, said he was sat in his taxi when another male got in the car, became abusive and punched him.

The driver was left with minor injuries after the assault on Wednesday, at around 1.50am on St Edmund Street.

No arrests have been made.

Police constable Adam Bayliss, of Weymouth Police, said: "This unprovoked attack has left the victim very shaken and I am appealing for witnesses to assist with our investigation.

"The victim has described the offender as a white man aged in his early twenties and around six feet tall, with tattoos on his neck.

"He had cropped dark hair, spoke with a London accent and wore dark clothing."

PC Bayliss added: "A second man is also believed to have been involved in this attack, and he is described as black, aged in his twenties and wearing a hooded white top.

"Shortly after the incident, the pair met up with two women, one of which ran off with one of the suspects towards the Town Bridge.

"The black male involved then got into a taxi with a woman, which dropped them off along Pottery Lane."

Witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police on 101.
