Two topical issues are the funding crisis at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and the need for more housing within the borough.

I offer the following suggestion: build houses on Weymouth golf course. This has a number of advantages.

The borough council already owns the freehold, the land is within a housing area and not open to the general public, and there are a number of road access points.

In addition adjoining properties would not have the real and continuous danger of stray golf balls.

Stray golf balls have been a problem for many years and the council, as a public authority and the freeholder, is open to legal challenge under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights’ right to respect for family and private life which would result in the closure of the course and the award of substantial financial damages.

A new golf course should be built on land more suited for the purpose outside the town utilising just a fraction of the money this scheme would generate.

The new course could be built to championship standard thus giving players a real challenge and attracting national tournaments to the area. The result would be a win for all.
