A NEW running event in Dorset has been rated the third best marathon in the UK - ahead of London.

The Purbeck Marathon started last September and was a 'phenomenal success' according to organisers.

The specialist running magazine Runners' World rated the challenging event the third best marathon in the UK, beating many well-established events including the world-famous London Marathon.

The review noted the toughness of the event as well as the scenery and the locally-themed goodie bags that were handed to every finisher and included both Isle of Purbeck Beer and Purbeck Ice Cream.

Race Director Rose Clarke said: “This is important recognition of the hard work over many months that went into organising the first Purbeck Marathon.

“It also reflects on the many volunteers who helped on race day, many of them spending long periods in remote locations to ensure that no-one became lost and that the event passed incident-free.

“The friendliness and encouragement from the marshals was mentioned by many runners as they arrived at the finish on Swanage seafront.”

The course, with nearly 3,000 feet of climbs, is a predominately off-road event that is said to be both challenging and rewarding.

It starts and finishes at Swanage and takes in Kimmeridge, Tyneham and Corfe Castle. Entries are now open for the second Purbeck Marathon on September 15.

Entry numbers are limited due to the nature of the terrain and organisers expecting an early rush on places.
