A GROUP of cyclists, who stepped foot into Warrington for the first time in June, won’t be returning in a hurry after being greeted with a not-so-warm welcome.

The team of fundraisers, who were taking part in a charity cycle, were met with a torrent of verbal abuse, threats and insults as they travelled through the centre of Warrington.

Nigel Crocker, from Jersey, said: “Warrington was the third town we travelled through on the Friday. We had already cycled through Lancaster and Wigan on a day where we would travel 116 miles.

“When we reached Warrington, we had cars flying past us, taking no care of the bikers around them. There was also a group of girls who pulled up next to us and threw food at us.”

The cycling team were taking part in a charity event which comprised of a gruelling trek up three of the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales as well as cycling 450 miles between the three peaks.

The group of 27 cyclists were raising money to help pay for flights for sick children, from Jersey, to fly to the UK for treatment.

The team cycled through several cities during their biking expedition and never encountered any problems like the hostility they faced in Warrington – much to the group’s shock.

But after having food launched at them and the lack of care by motorists, unfortunately, the cyclists’ treatment only got worse.

The 36-year-old continued: “A group of lads pulled up next to us and, in an extremely threatening manner, screamed profanities and demanded to know what we were doing.”

“It’s safe to say our first impressions of Warrington were not good.”

Nigel is certain that he will not return to Warrington and claims many of the other cyclists feel exactly the same.

Nigel said: “After seeing most of the UK during our biking challenge, my experience of Warrington means I have ticked it off my list of places to visit and I won’t be returning
