• Rivalry was as keen as ever at the SP Village Vegetable Show, with some excellent produce on display. Voting was by popular choice which resulted in Bill Egerton presenting the winners with their certificates as follows Longest runner bean, 3 tomatoes and Anything grown in a greenhouse - Dave Caddy; Longest cucumber - Ian Locke; Selection of herbs - Elise Potter; 3 carrots - David Pennington; Single lettuce and 3 courgettes - Dot Emblen; 3 beans - Joyce Faraday; 5 soft fruit - Bill Egerton; Any other vegetable - Louise Sheaves (we were assured that her red onions were not painted!); A bunch of flowers - Mike Haine; A bunch of different leaves - Ros Evans. Announcing the winner of the Scarecrow Competition, Dave Martin said that the scarecrow voting slips included one full of praise from some Italian visitors and that after a close fought contest the winners were Liz and Chris Ballard, with the Baker (Entry No. 13) in Puddledock Lane. After much dirtying of hands and the use of a new electronic digital weighing machine Peter Sheaves presented the results of the Des Evans Trophy for the highest weight of spuds grown in a tub. This year Dave Martin managed the staggering weight of 0.57kg, up approx 1000% from last year, but it still wasn’t enough to topple Jane Walsh from top spot with 1.86 kg, though 3 other competitors managed over 1 kg. She was presented with the unique trophy by Ros Evans. In conclusion Bill Egerton thanked the ladies for the wonderful teas and cakes, Peter Sheaves for organising the vegetable show, Dave Martin the Scarecrow Competition and all those who entered the competitions and/or turned up on the day to vote. The cream teas raised £116 and the scarecrow voting £96, to which would be added the proceeds of the vegetable show itself.
