THERE are an above average number of skin cancer cases in Weymouth and Portland, according to NHS figures.

Residents in the borough are being warned about the dangers of too much UV radiation from the sun after it was revealed that there is a higher incidence of skin cancer compared to the rest of England.

NHS Dorset has launched a Safer Sun campaign to help educate people of the dangers and how they can easily minimise their personal risk.

Members of the team will be giving out information and distributing free sachets of sunscreen.

Celia Canter, of NHS Dorset, said: “Without doubt we are fortunate to live in a great part of England and a huge number of us enjoy life outdoors whether it is for work or as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“Unfortunately being out in the hot weather does bring some dangers.

“With this campaign we want to take the opportunity to reinforce the safety messages and help people reduce both their risk and that of their family and friends.

“Whilst the sun is out the message is simple – cover up, stay out of direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm, take on plenty of fluids and slap on plenty of sunscreen.”

GP practices in the area are supporting the campaign and will be offering advice and guidance.

The team will be out and about at Weymouth Jubilee Clock tomorrow and also between 2pm and 5pm on Thursday, August 29.
