VISITORS got to look behind the scenes as the curtain goes up of a new beginning for Weymouth Pavilion.

An open weekend was a success as people toured the facilities and saw what was on offer.

Performances from local drama and dance organisations including WOW, live music, demonstrations from various classes such as ballroom dancing experts and a welcome from the Ugly Sisters starring in the forthcoming pantomime all added to the fun.

Phil Say’s community takeover was given the green light from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and it has been open for more than six weeks.

Financial pressures prompted the council to consider demolishing the Pavilion, but after an outcry it was decided to hand it over to the community to run.

Mr Say, pictured, intends to widen the appeal of the Pavilion so there’s ‘something for everyone,’ at affordable prices.

As well as being a home for arts and community groups, it will also be a venue for big events and shows, corporate events, private parties and weddings.

People were given guided tours including going on stage to see what it’s like to stand in the spotlight in front of a 1,000-seat theatre, before watching brief performances. There was also live music in the Ocean Room.

Mr Say said he wanted to open up the ‘hidden’ parts of the Pavilion to add to the visitor experience.

Julie Storey, whose company was the first to perform in the new-look theatre, conducted the tours and said: “We had about 30 to a tour and they all had a great experience.”

Poppy Butcher joined a tour with friends Joan Harris and Irene Sanger and they enjoyed tea and cake afterwards.

Mrs Butcher said: “I have performed at this theatre and it is a wonderful place. We need a theatre in a seaside town for visitors, and for locals.”
