A MAN was airlifted to hospital after losing his thumb on a fishing boat in Lyme Bay.
The Portland Coastguard Rescue helicopter was scrambled to the vessel 'Spanish Eyes' at around 9.15am this morning.
The man, who had been fishing with one other crew member, caught his thumb in winching gear.
Rescue teams recovered the thumb and rushed the casualty to hospital in Salisbury.
A spokesman for Portland Coastguard said: "We reacted quickly to this incident after being called by the skipper who told us an accident had happened onboard.
"The rescue helicopter was scrambled and the man was taken to hospital where they are working to reattach the thumb."
