WEYMOUTH RAIDERS 50

TRES BARRILES HEAT 73

THE Raiders were looking for a much-needed win after several good performances in Solent Men’s Division Four, but once again they just missed out.

Weymouth took an early lead thanks to baskets from Kyle Houlden and Jay Wilson, though some poor defending allowed the Heat to reply.

However, Jake Kinder scored 11 points in the first quarter to push the Raiders 15-13 ahead.

The second quarter wasn’t as successful for the hosts and missed free-throws and poor turnovers saw the Heat take the lead.

Weymouth did not lie down and succesive scores from Matt Clarke-Williams and a basket by Jerry Thompson got them back in contention.

A strong finish to the quarter by the Heat put them 10 points up at half-time.

Tougher defence and quicker breaks from the back worked a treat for the Raiders in the third quarter and Kinder registered 19 straight points to seemingly turn the tide.

Every time the Heat looked to try and run away with the match the Raiders would claw their way back with multiple steals and a nice jump shot from Max Gilmartin.

At one stage, Weymouth were only a point adrift of their rivals but as the quarter finished the visitors battled to a 47-42 lead.

Unfortunately for Weymouth, the worst was yet to come and the last quarter witnessed the away side surge clear thanks to a 26-point haul.

Consolation baskets from Jay Wilson and Gilmartin were not enough as the Heat ran out 73-50 winners.

Raiders coach Andy Blackwood said: “It was unfortunate for the boys to put in a great performance and not come away with a win because of a poor fourth quarter.

“If we tighten up our defence our future performances might see a dramatic change.”
