So far this week the town centre and surrounding area seems to have taken a collective rest in activity before the Christmas rush, writes Inspector Steve Marsh of Dorchester police section.

There have been some break-ins to motor vehicles and thefts of diesel as I highlighted last week.

There were very few incidents related to alcohol in the town centre last weekend, which was pleasing and our increased uniform presence will continue.

The next few days sees the start of Christmas festivities with the lights being switched on and the Cracker night.

I always feel that Cracker signals the start of Christmas and it has previously been a well-attended and well- behaved event.

My team will be out in the town and our wonderful volunteers from the crime prevention group will also be out passing on really good information.

I want Christmas to be peaceful and safe for everyone and I am determined to stop those who see Christmas as their opportunity to steal and cause problems.

Simple action by you can make their lives and offending much harder.

We also had to deal with an increase in road traffic accidents.

There is no doubt that as the weather changes the accident rate increases.

A concern highlighted to me recently by a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists quite rightly pointed out how simple steps can make a real difference. In particular it is vital that all vehicles’ lights are working.

This must include all lights; it is not legal or safe to have working side lights but defective headlamps.

The cost of a bulb is often a few pounds; the cost of an accident is far greater.

Please check your vehicles are road legal and safe.

Drivers should also be aware that drinking and driving is not acceptable.

Please do not be tempted to drink and drive – nominate a driver as a group or get a taxi.
