JUDI James could soon be swapping the cowshed for the catwalk.
The woman from Littlebredy has been shortlisted for Britain’s Sexiest Farmer award. The self-confessed ‘mature lady farmer’ beat entrants half her age to make it to the final round.
Farmers Weekly magazine with the help of The Original Muck Boot Company will crown one male and one female winner.
Ms James, 53, works on a farm and is busy establishing her own veal business. She also won the UK Worker of the Year competition in 2013.
She said: “This competition came out of the Worker of the Year win itself; that’s how I got involved. It started out as a tongue in cheek idea but organisers must have liked the fact I hadn’t given up on my dreams.
“I only started farming aged 47 so it’s true that you’re never too old to try something new.”
Ms James, who has two sons, Edward, 27, and 13-year-old Jason, aims to own a farm where she can live and work simultaneously. Her son Jason is at Brymore Academy in Somerset hoping to follow in his mum’s footsteps.
She added: “I knew at 53 years old I was never going to be the sexiest entry, all the other finalists are half my age but I felt inspired to give it a go.
“I was gobsmacked to be shortlisted and want to spread the word that divorced women can follow their ambitions, and that getting divorced is not the be all and end all of life.
“It doesn’t matter how old you are; there are lots of opportunities especially if you think outside the box, here’s to all us mature lady farmers.”
Competition entries were narrowed down with the help of fashion expert Gok Wan.
The public can vote for a male and female finalist online from today and voting closes on Friday, January 24.
The two finalists will then take part in a professional photo shoot by Farmers Weekly.
Farmers Weekly Community editor Tim Relf added: “The competition will help dispel the myth that farmers are old-fashioned and scruffy, therefore hopefully encouraging more young people to consider careers in this exciting innovative and high-tech sector.”
