THE Portland coastguard rescue helicopter airlifted a man with a head injury to hospital from HMS Bulwark.

Rescue teams were alerted at 10am on Thursday to carry out a medical evaluation.

The ship was in the Brixham area and the man taken to Derriford Hospital with a gash to the head.

Elsewhere, coastguards investigated concerns for a lone mariner on a voyage from West Bay to Falmouth, Cornwall.

Concern was raised as no contact had been made, since the departure in the early hours of Monday morning.

Investigations revealed that he was making progress with his passage under the observation of Brixham Coastguard.

Events unfolded at 3.40pm.
