SHORE THING: Charmouth School Year 1 pupils on the beach

CHILDREN from Charmouth School didn’t let rain stop play as they headed on to Charmouth Beach for an educational afternoon.

The school is currently working towards beach school accreditation, which allows them to extend the education outside of the classroom and into more practical studies on Charmouth Beach.

Working closely with a ‘beach school leader’ from the heritage centre, every class from the school will have the opportunity to attend lessons on the beach, which will see links between the national curriculum and practical learning.

As part of their learning the Year 1 Coral Class were greeted by ‘Captain Lindsey’ from the Charmouth Heritage Centre for an afternoon of pirate-themed activities on the beach, which included building a pirate ship from pebbles and beach debris.

After building the ship, all the children walked the plank before embarking on a treasure hunt where they found a box full of gold coins, and learned a pirate song to sing in celeb-ration.

Gillian Morris, who is head-teacher at Charmouth Primary School, said: “With lots of new and exciting changes at Charmouth Primary School and a clear vision for our future, our aim is to ensure that all our children reach their maximum potential in all areas of the curriculum.

“The partnership between school, home and the local community is strongly valued at Charmouth Primary School and we are extremely fortunate to have such tremendous support, enthusiasm and dedication from our all our staff, parents and the wider community
