I was wondering whether to write defending Weymouth & Portland council (yes, really!) against charges of incompetence levelled by Steve White, writing from the Netherlands (Letters March 17), when up pops Councillor Roebuck (Letters March 18) to prove Mr White’s point.

Mr White looks in vain for a ‘scintilla of vision for the long-term future of the town’.

Cllr Roebuck tells us council staff have to move to Dorchester because the council sold the council houses. Vision? Future? Eh?

Apart from the bankers, there are two main reasons why the borough finances are tricky.

The first is national: Cllr Roebuck’s coalition government makes it almost impossible for councils to invest in new housing stock.

The second is local: for decades our council has been fixated on tourism – and that blinkered thinking is now being perpetuated by the Weymouth BID and its plans for a new ‘middle-class’ visitor advertising campaign.

We need investment that will attract investment. If we cannot invest in ourselves, how can we expect anybody else to do so?
