UPDATE: Police arrest two men after stabbing in Westmacott Road, Weymouth

Dorset Echo: SCENE: Westmacott Road, off Dorchester Road, at Redlands SCENE: Westmacott Road, off Dorchester Road, at Redlands

A MAN has been injured in an alleged stabbing incident in Weymouth.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said the force was alerted shortly after 1am yesterday to reports of a stabbing in Westmacott Road.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police and the ambulance service attended and an injured man was found.

The police spokesman said: “The male received minor injuries during the assault.

“Officers have detained two males who are helping with their enquiries.”

Police said they were unable to reveal any further information regarding the identity of the injured male or those arrested.

Several residents in Westmacott Road were unaware any incident had taken place in the street the following day.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s spokesman for community safety Councillor Geoff Petherick reassured members of the public that this type of offence was ‘highly unusual’ for Weymouth, particularly in a residential area well away from the town centre.

He added that any incidents involving reports of knives or blades are treated very seriously by the authorities. Cllr Petherick said: “It’s something which we don’t tolerate at all, both as a council and as far as the police are concerned.

“Anything to do with knives the police will act on very promptly.”

He added: “My sympathies go out to the individual this has happened to.”

Cllr Petherick said that, while the police and local authorities were doing their bit to clamp down on crime in the town, the local community also had an important role to play in coming forward with information that will be treated with the strictest confidence.

He said: “Any information people have would be very much appreciated by the police.”

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Ray Banham said: “I’m sad to hear about this, it’s a very rare case in this area.

“It’s pleasing to know that at least two men have been arrested so they have hopefully got somebody for it.”

Cllr Banham said he was also pleased to hear that the ‘unfortunate victim’ did not suffer more serious injuries as a result of the incident.
