MAYOR-ELECT Tim Munro has lost his chance of becoming Portland's first citizen after a new vote was taken at a meeting last night.

Town councillors were asked if they had any other nominations for the role of mayor and Cllr Munro, Cllr Rod Wild and Cllr Rob Hughes were all proposed. But it was Cllr Hughes who got the most votes.

His deputy will be Cllr Wild.

The mayor-making ceremony was due to take place last week but it was cancelled amid chaotic scenes.

Residents protested Cllr Munro's nomination outside last week's meeting. Mayor Les Ames told the council he would be deferring the meeting due to a 'serious difference of opinion,' regarding the nomination.

There were similar protests before last evening's meeting with people standing outside the venue in Fortuneswell holding placards reading 'No Tim Munro for Mayor'.

Cllr Munro became unpopular after he led the island precept increase which provoked a major revolt.

Before the meeting, protestor Sue Lees from the Voice of Portland residents' group said: “We don't want him as mayor.”

Les Ames stepped down from the office of mayor and received a standing ovation and cheers in tribute to all his good work.

Cllr Ames said the island was very important to him and was a wonderful place to live.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Ames added that today would be his last day as a councillor as he would be retiring.

Cllr Hughes thanked the councillors and members of the public and said his chosen charities would be the NCI Coastwatch and Dorset Air Ambulance.

After the meeting, Cllr Munro said he was not upset and said he had no issue with the decision.

He said that the whole situation had got a lot of people involved in the town council that perhaps otherwise wouldn't have been there.

I wonder if that's how he'll go around introducing himself now. "Hi, I'm Unpopular Tim Munro".

A tragedy for Portland. Portland has lost its beard.

Tim Munro and his talented family were going to help Portland make it to the big time... now, all is lost.

Forgive them, Tim! They know not what they do!

Ooooh, and doesn't he look happy about it!! Fabulous picture... Am very pleased that someone else will be having a go - couldn't be worse could it? Lets hope it will lead to some forthright decisions and standing up to Weymouth Council. Sorry to read that Les Ames is retiring, never thought I would see the day, but I wish him well and hope his days are long and full of well deserved sunshine.

common sense applies to Portland TC and the right man for the job, good luck to him that council needs change, well done to Cllr Les Ames who has served Portland for many years with dignity.

Mr Munro... You cannot kid a kidder! You say you are not upset? No... Not upset... You are Gutted! The people have got one over you and you hate it! Rob Hughes will be a much better representative of the people of Portland than you ever could be! It is such a shame that You and your family have bought shame on the PTC. A once respected body. Your defiance in all calls for you to resign has just fuelled people's dislike of you... But then again... You don't care do you? Little defiant words printed in the Echo... Blaming other councillors for Voting for you as Mayor... Clearly giving Portland a bad name.... So.. All the defiant comments you have made may make you feel better in the short term.... But it is your arrogance that has lead you to this point.. Portland is much stronger than you think. Your comments are laughable... Please do carry on making them... Now finally... You said and I quote... " I will be guided by the People" so Mr Munro... Why haven't you resigned yet? Because as far as I am aware only 6 people want you stay. And 3 of them are from your family!.Good Luck Rob Hughes and thank- you!

The number of negative votes shows that people really don't get irony any more, doesn't it.

Rob Hughes is a good egg although admittedly with an appalling taste in neck ties. (Seriously, scroll up. All that glitters.....)

This is a good result for the Island. Hopefully he'll get the help and support he needs to make his mayor-ship a good one.

Interestingly the Munros & Denton-White seem to have switched their dubious attention to PTC sub committees. They've got themselves elected as chairman or vice chairman of most of the committees available. If the people of Portland don't want to see any mischief done in shady back rooms I would suggest that they attend these committee meetings & make sure everyone knows what's being discussed.

Portland is stuck with the Famouse Five for the next year so let's make sure that a) they don't do any damage during this time & b) they don't have a political future beyond next May's council elections.

Congratulations to Cllr. Hughes on his appointment, and many thanks to those councillors who had the courage to vote for what they knew to be right.

I couldn't be happier with this decision, hopefully it's the first in his downfall. He is a terrible bully and a tyrant who treats his staff like slaves. Drink driving is also another to add to his offences, the problem is his family is crooked and all on the council. So he will never go away. What a truly disgusting detestable person, good riddance to you, you horrible horrible angry little cretin.
