Be prepared for thunder and lightning: Weather warning for Dorset

Dorset Echo: A Yellow weather warning is in place across Dorset for heavy and thundery downpours A Yellow weather warning is in place across Dorset for heavy and thundery downpours

RESIDENTS should ‘be prepared’ for heavy downpours and possible thunderstorms this afternoon.

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for Dorset which is in place until midnight tonight.

It says there will be ‘heavy showers with the risk of some slow-moving thundery downpours.’ Rainfall of more than 30mm is likely in places within three hours, with a risk of 15mm falling in less than an hour locally.

This is because the ‘active frontal zone’ that brought last night’s heavy showers has left a ‘deeply unstable airmass’ and with daytime heating, this creates heavy downpours and possibly thunderstorms.

It is predicted the Weymouth area will get heavy rainfall and thunderstorms before 3pm today, with more wet weather heading in at around 7pm tonight.

On Monday night, Echo readers sent in photographs of lightning which rendered the sky across the area.

In the event of thunder and lightning today, you can send your weather pictures to the newsdesk or Tweet @Dorsetecho
