ENGLAND’S football team may have let the nation down in Brazil, but dancers from Weymouth did not as they helped Team England scoop the Dance World Cup.

Six dancers from Quay Theatre Arts Dance School, in Lynch Lane, went to Portugal as part of the national team to compete against dancers from 38 other countries for the coveted crown of the best dancers in the world.

Charley Vincent, 19, George Vincent, 16, Ashley Townsend, 18, Skyela Dunstall Stevens, 16 Jordan Deadman, 17 and Scarlett Holloway, 16, all travelled to the Algarve between June 29 and July 5 to dance their way to the title, as the points they gained in their categories contributed to the overall England score.

Charley Vincent competed with his brother George in the Modern Dance duet, with the pair securing the best score from Weymouth’s participants as they finished fourth overall.

Charley said: “The other dancers from the other countries were all of a very high standard but being at the world cup and each country bringing their best amateur dancers we did not expect anything different.

“It was a really nice surprise to finish fourth, with competitions like these you can never predict what is going to happen so it was really nice to finish in the top five.

Alison Harman-Beglan, manager of the dance school, said: “Charley and George both did great in finishing fourth but all of the other dancers did very well as well. We are all very proud of them and their achievements.

“A lot of credit must go to Jill Tindale who teaches them and we would all like to thank her for all her hard work.”
