A PORTLAND man is saddling up for a 350-mile bike journey for charity.

Sean Phelps, 40, is raising money for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) and the Charity for Civil Servants.

He is taking part in the Royal Marines Ride 350, which on August 2 which starts and finishes at the Royal Marines Corps Museum in Portsmouth.

The ride is expected to take at least 24 hours for most riders to complete. He’ll be supported alongside others with stations in Blandford, Taunton and Yeovil.

Sean, a PE instructor at the Portland Young Offenders’ Institution, is no stranger to charity bike challenges.

He was one of two cyclists to take part in an 800-mile marathon charity challenge in 2010. Along with his friend Tony Walker, Mr Phelps cycled from Saint Malo to Barcelona.

Sean said: “This one is totally different because I will be riding start to finish for 350 miles.”

Sean spent six and a half years in the Royal Marines. He believes he’s physically fit. He said: “I’m spending every spare minute on an exercise bike.

“I’m doing any sort of cardio training.

“I’m just looking forward to the satisfaction that I can do the mental side of this challenge.”

The RMCTF aims to provide a better quality of life to serving and retired Royal Marines and their families.

The Charity for Civil Servants, meanwhile, supports all civil servants, past and present, throughout their lives with whatever problems they may have.
