HUNDREDS of disabled people from across Dorset came to Weymouth to take part in the Adults Disability Sports Festival.

The festival, which is part of the 10-day Dorset Festival of Sport, took place on the beach and offered guests the opportunity to take part in sports including athletics, football, golf, sailing, kayaking, table tennis, volleyball and wheelchair dancing.

Dave Franks, Dorset County Council Sports and Activity manager, said: “It’s an amazing day. The people who come are those who don’t get the option to do these activities every day.”

The festival, which was sponsored by Sainsbury’s and Chesil Trust, is in its eighth year and was attended by around 200 disabled adults and 100 volunteers and staff.

Steve Davies, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Events Manager, said: “It’s a wonderfully successful day, it’s special as it offers people with mental and physical disabilities a chance to experience a unique opportunity.”

Guests were also able to take part in craftmaking where they could try sewing, painting pebbles and creating door signs from driftwood.

Jane Malpass, 35, from Christchurch, attended the festival for the first time this year. She said: “I’m having a really good time.”

Peter Brown, from Sainsbury’s, said “Sainsbury’s are neighbours in the community and we want to support this kind of event as much as we can.”
