A GROUP of Dorchester teenagers are hosting fashion fun for a good cause with a catwalk show to raise vital funds for the town’s branch of Mencap.
The young volunteers, who signed up for the National Citizen Service earlier in the year, have been hard at work organising the event which takes place this week.
The young people have control over the whole project and chose the charity, Mencap, and developed the idea of a fashion show.
Visitors will be able to watch a catwalk show of looks modelled by members of the Friendship Club, which helps adults with learning difficulties go out and enjoy new experiences.
Volunteer Sophie Colley, 16, explained the event was part of their final week meeting people within the community and giving something back, after two weeks of camping in Cornwall and Dorset testing their limits.
The group already have various businesses and charities signed up to be involved with the event by setting up stalls or donating clothes, including Julia’s House, Sue Ryder, Weldmar hospice care and vintage shop Custard Hall.
Abbie Harper, 16, from Blandford, said: “I think this experience has really benefited me, it’s nice to give something back to the community and as it’s getting closer to the event I’m looking forward to seeing how much we can help and hopefully raising a lot of money for charity.”
NCS leader at Weymouth College, Lisa Dixon, said: “The group wanted something that would raise awareness as well as money for Mencap, as they need more donations and support.
“So they thought of the fashion show as it would appeal to lots of different people.
“They have given up their own time over the summer for this and have been busy fundraising beforehand too.”
She added they had already raised £170 but hoped to raise £500 in total on the night.
The event will be held at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester on Thursday, August 28 from 6.30pm-9.30pm.
Tea, coffee and homemade cakes will also be sold on the night and there will even be a disco afterwards to celebrate their efforts.
Entry is free, and there is a £10 donation to set up a stall.
Interested stallholders should contact 07590 226572.
