Dorset Police have thanked the public for their patience this evening amid the travel chaos.

Insp Matt Butler said: "We are aware that the road closure is causing congestion and are working working to re-open the road as soon as possible.

"In the mean time, we are grateful for the public's patience."

Anyone with information about the crash should call PC 2765 Cotterill of the Weymouth Traffic Unit on 101.

We've just spoken to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance team. They say the woman who was airlifted from the scene of the A354 collision was taken to Dorset County Hospital, and not Southampton as previously reported.

She was reportedly suffering neck and leg pain. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

We will update you on her condition as soon as possible.

Firefighters also rushed to the scene to mechanically remove one of the casualties from the car. It is understood that person was the one airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

“The road is totally blocked.”

A police car is currently blocking the road at the Winterborne Herringston junction.

The eyewitness said: “They are allowing cars to go along the minor road through Upwey, along by Maiden Castle and going to Weymouth.”

The road through the village was closed in both directions after the crash and motorists were urged to avoid the area.

The crash took place outside the post office and police and ambulance both attended the scene.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they were called at 2.16pm to a report of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian. He said the female casualty was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

He added: “She has head injuries and an injury to her back.”

However, a spokesman for Dorset Police said her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

Road closures were lifted at 3.10pm.

He said: “The car involved was a Vauxhall Corsa, registered to a lady from Devon.

“The incident is not thought to be life-threatening at this stage.”

The A35 in Chideock is the main route through the village and there were traffic backlogs towards Charmouth and Bridport.

Most importantly, let's hope nobody's been hurt too badly. To be honest, I've avoided driving anywhere too far lately as the traffic has been so bad with more people 'staycationing'.

The U.k has the poorest road infrastructure in Europe. I am not defending driving standards, but a proper 21st century road network would help.
It is outrageous that Dorset doesn't have an East-West modern dual carriageway running through it, or even proper access to the M5 when going north.
Every developed European Country has double the amount of dual carriageway roads per person when compared to the U.K.!

Yes, but the reality is drivers will lose concentration, make errors in judgement, get frustrated with imcompetent drivers etc etc etc. We are after all just human.

Therefore, roads should be made as easy as possible to negotiate and enable quick passage from A to B so that the above human frailities don't cause accidents that injure or kill people. The accident rate on Dorset roads is way to high.

Turn your pop-up blocker on, and scan for viruses. It's probably nothing to do the the OHEC.

Trying to make roads idiot proof won't remove the idiots. Whatever you do will only force them to find other ways to be idiots.
