THE sky’s the limit for two Weymouth care workers who are doing a 15,000ft tandem skydive for charity.

Nicola Turner, 27, of Bryn Road Weymouth and Jennifer Ayles, 24, of Kitchener Road, Weymouth have teamed up to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society, which provides information and funds research into dementia.

The two care assistants from Weymouth’s Queen Charlotte Care Home say working with people who are or will be affected by dementia during their lifetime has inspired their fundraising.

Mrs Turner, 27, a senior health care assistant, said: “We wanted to raise money and give something back for a cause which is close to our hearts because of the people we care for. We were chatting one day about our ‘life lists’ and both had skydiving on them so we decided to do it together.

“Jumping out of a plane is an exceptional way to raise money for a very worthwhile charity.”

She added: “We are both feeling nervous and excited at the same time. We have been having a weekly countdown when we see each other at work.

“So far we have raised over £800 including through a fete at work last weekend, but we are hoping to raise over £1,000 between us.”

Research from The Alzheimer’s Society shows 750,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia and the number of people living with dementia is expected to rise to 1.7m by 2051.

Mrs Turner said: “It's great to think that we will be raising funds to help support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.”

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are delighted that Nicola and Jennifer are giving their time to support Alzheimer’s Society.

“One in three people over 65 will die with dementia.

“It is more than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact on families and loved ones. Please back Nicola and Jennifer in their fundraising efforts so that the Alzheimer’s Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.”

The skydive takes place on Sunday at Dunkeswell Airfield in Honiton.
