A HEADTEACHER has moved to reassure parents that their children were safe at all times after a man allegedly threatened to bomb a school.

Jo Luxon of St George’s Primary School on Portland has spoken out and explained the reasoning behind the school’s silence after the police launched an investigation into an alleged threat.

A man has been charged in connection with the incident.

The alleged threat was made last Monday and police reassured the community through the Echo there was no danger and the school remained open.

The school didn’t offer a comment on an Echo article on Saturday.

However, the school has now written to parents explaining the school’s position.

Mrs Luxon said she wished to reassure parents that the ‘safety and well-being of children are at the forefront of school life’.

She added: “Due to the confidentiality surrounding the police presence recently, I was prevented from releasing any information and had to adhere to very stringent and statutory safeguarding procedures.

“At no time was the safety of children at risk and the school has clear guidelines and risk assessments in place. In the event of imminent danger, all schools would carry out a ‘lock down’ procedure or close the school.

“I have been working closely with the police on a daily basis and it was imperative that I adhered to advice given to me.

“The children of St George’s were safe at all times and the school was unable to release any information which may have hampered the police investigation and heightened speculation within the community.”

l Dorset Police said a 30-year-old Portland man has been charged with using threatening words and behaviour. He is due to appear at court next month.
