A WEYMOUTH man is warning people to beware of a possible scam.
Dickie Borthwick, 79, who was famously the UK’s oldest footballer, is urging people to be aware after he got what he believes is a scam phone call.
He called Action Fraud to report the call.
He said: “A smooth-talking guy called and said I believe you spoke to my colleague recently about stocks and shares, which I hadn’t.”
The man said he could make Mr Borthwick a good offer and was ‘quite pushy.’ When Mr Borthwick asked him for a reference from another client the man refused.
Mr Borthwick said: “He was very pushy. I could hardly get a word in edgeways.”
He added: “He said he was working from home not working for a company and does everything from home, but wasn’t prepared to give me a reference. I definitely smelt a rat there. These financial advisers don’t work like that.”
When the man finally hung up, Mr Borthwick called 1471 but there was no number left.
He called Action Fraud to report it.
He said: “I’m fairly sure it was a scam. I’m 99.9 per cent sure it’s a scam by his attitude.”
Now Mr Borthwick is advising people to be aware and not give out their financial details over the phone, but report any concerns to Action Fraud.
