A fishermen's charity has whelk-omed a huge donation from this year’s Dorset Seafood Festival.

Organisers, sponsors and key players from The Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival are celebrating after they raised a total of £10,000 for the festival’s charity The Fishermen’s Mission.

The event, which took place over the weekend of July 12-13, enjoyed glorious weather and stallholders provided a mouth-watering selection of fish dishes for the thousands of visitors.

Organisers said the festival was the ‘biggest ever’, estimating that around 60,000 people attended.

This was the seventh Seafood Festival in Weymouth and the fifth supported by Pommery Champagne as the main sponsor.

Roger Dalton, Chairman and Co-director of Dorset Seafood Festival Ltd said: “The Fishermen’s Mission is a charity dear to our hearts especially after such a difficult year with the winter storms. We hope this money, raised through sponsorship and fund raising activities, can be used in a truly practical way to help local fishing communities.”

The Fishermen’s Mission generated thousands of pounds through sale of cook books, raffle tickets and fridge magnets, with help from the stall collection boxes, Passionate About Fish demos and face painters. There are already plans for next year’s festival, with provisional dates of the July 11-12 weekend.
