AROUND 17,000 brown wheelie bins will be recycled when a new collection service starts.
The current wheelie bins for food waste and cardboard will not be needed when the new Recycle for Dorset collection service starts in Weymouth and Portland on Monday, October 13.
Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) says brown wheelie bins should be put out whether full or empty on residents’ food waste collection day next week. After their bin has been emptied, residents should leave it out until it is collected by a separate vehicle, which should be by 6pm.
The bins will be taken to Wessex Recycling in Somerset to be shredded and granulated to make new plastic products.
The DWP will not come back to collect any brown bins that were not left out. Residents may keep their brown bin for their own personal storage but they will no longer be emptied.
The DWP says all households will have a smaller, lockable brown bin for food waste, while cardboard should go in their green recycling bin. It is currently delivering new containers in Weymouth and Portland.
Residents should not start using their new bins until their current service ends as they will not be emptied, officials have said.
